The GSI future project, the accelerator facility FAIR, offers a multitude of new experimental possibilities for research in nuclear and high energy heavy ion physics. With it, enormous technological challenges in the area of particle detectors need to be solved. One core area of activities of the GSI detector laboratory is the development of solid state detectors. These are in particular radiation tolerant silicon strip detectors for tracking applications and their system integration as well as CVD diamond detectors, for the employment in critical areas of physics experiments with relativistic proton- and heavy-ion-beams as well as for accelerator beam diagnostics in general.

The successful candidate will be expected to assume the lead in detector systems projects. Further he/she will be responsible for activities on system-integration and -development of silicon strip detectors for tracking applications and their radiation tolerance.

The area of CVD-diamond detectors comprises the following working areas:

  • study of the electronic properties of new CVD-diamond detector materials
  • detector characterization with specially developed broadband electronics
  • tests of radiation hardness
  • development of new detector applications

Finally, the successful candidate will represent the projects at scientific conferences and observe technological developments in the field. The successful candidate will be working at the location of GSI. Intensive travelling activities will be part his/her working life.

The successful candidate will have an international reputation for research and innovation in particle detector physics. He/she will have well founded experience on the integration of silicon strip detectors for tracking applications and their radiation tolerance and on CVD-diamond detector technology. The successful candidate will have the potential to raise external research funding from EU sources to support research activities in detector R&D as well as to coordinate the corresponding joined research activities

For this position we offer:
A permanent contract for work in a team of engaged experts with background in physics and engineering, very good infrastructure with large clean rooms and adequate machine park and access to further supporting technological departments of GSI. The salary will be paid on base of TVöD.

Applications should include a CV, a list of publications, a brief research statement and two letters of recommendation. These documents should be sent by email as one pdf-file, referring to the above reference number, by 16.12.2011, to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
